Question:

I am expecting my first child in the fall. I feel like I am putting on too much weight. Can I do The South Beach Diet while I am pregnant?

- Mom-in-the-Making

Answer:

Hi Mom and congratulations! According to The South Beach Diet book, both pregnant and breastfeeding women can follow Phase 2 of The South Beach Diet.

The reason Phase 1 of The South Beach Diet is not appropriate for pregnancy is that it is much too restrictive. (Phase 1 strictly limits many foods including fruit.)

As you probably already know, you need to eat a variety of healthful foods -- including plenty of fruits and vegetables, as well as dairy products -- as good nutrition for both you and your precious cargo.

Phase 2 of The South Beach Diet is acceptable during pregnancy because it is a very healthful way of eating.

Phase 2 allows many of the foods you should be eating right now anway. Low-fat dairy, certain fruits, vegetables, and whole grains are all acceptable and encouraged.

Additionally, you will want to consume of three cups of 1-percent or fat-free milk per day to your meal plan while you are pregnant or nursing.

But remember, you should only try to go on a diet while you're pregnant if your doctor has told you to lose weight. If he has not, make sure you ask him about your weight before you start making any major dietary changes.

When you go to your next OB/GYN appointment, it would be a good idea to show your doctor what foods are on the Phase 2 Foods to Enjoy list in case he is not familiar with the diet.

Only your doctor can tell you what your healthy pregnancy weight is. Maybe it's better for you to maintain your current weight (and stop gaining), rather than actually trying to lose weight during your pregnancy. If so, then even Phase 2 is not an appropriate diet plan for you.

Bottom line: Don't try to lose weight without your doctor's approval; however, if you receive it, carefully following Phase 2 of The South Beach Diet is a healthy, nutritious way to do it!

Thanks for sending in your question. Take good care of yourself and the little one!
