Metabolife Recalls Diet Bars
Label reflects incorrect nutrition data.

Dateline: May 16, 2001

Metabolife International -- manufacturer of several popular weight loss aids -- has issued a recall of its Diet & Energy Bars, which have been available on the market for approximately four months.

On May 7, the San Diego-based company's CEO, David Brown, stated the following:

"Metabolife discovered the excessive vitamin A amounts during Metabolife's own quality assurance sampling audit, which was confirmed by independent testing by the manufacturer."
It was the company's own research that brought the error to light, not the occurrence of unfavorable side effects among the product's users. Brown added that Metabolife is performing the recall voluntarily "as a responsible company."

The recall is a result of incorrect labelling. Due to a manufacturing error in the form of a misplaced decimal place, the products contain a much higher level of vitamin A than the label indicates. Although over-consumption of vitamin A can cause serious health problems (including liver damage, bone abnormalities and birth defects), the company stresses that no illnesses related from the consumption of the bars have been reported.

The recall includes the following flavor bars:

  • Outrageous Oatmeal Raisin
  • Perfectly Peanut
  • Downright Chocolate
  • Lemony Lemon
All bars manufactured up until May 4, 2001, have the incorrect labels and are part of the recall. If you have purchased these bars, you should discard them immediately or return them to the place of purchase for a full refund. The recall does not include any other Metabolife brand products.
