Fact or Fiction?

Question:
I remember hearing once that overeating actually causes your stomach to stretch out which makes you more likely to overeat in the future. Is that true!?

Answer:
I always hate answers that start this way, but... it depends. If you overindulge now and again, chances are your stomach itself will not change size and it will not affect your appetite, or to be more precise, your sense of satiety.

However, if you continuously overeat on a regular basis, then, yes, your stomach will inevitably expand. When you eat too much on a regular basis, the muscles lining the outside of your stomach have to literally stretch out to make room for that extra food. It only stands to reason that once it is enlarged, you have to eat more to fill it up.

The good news? It’s never to late to break a bad habit. Stop overeating and start watching those portion sizes. Try eating half a sandwich instead of a whole one. One cookie instead of two. The little changes will make a difference in the end, I promise!

So, once you start controlling your portions and eating less, you will begin to feel satiated on smaller amounts. That’s why portion control is such a very important part of weight loss and maintenance! You can learn more about sizing up portions with our article, Portion Control Secrets.
