Question:

What happens on this diet if you're someone who doesn't really have more than eight pounds to lose?

- Tricia

Answer:

You can skip Phase 1 of The South Beach Diet entirely and start at Phase 2. Phase 2 is the less-stringent portion of the plan that allows adding certain carbs back into your diet.

Most people lose 1 or 2 pounds a week on Phase 2, so you could easily meet your goal within a couple of months.

The principles behind Phase 2 are guidelines for a healthier diet for anyone. Even if you don't have any weight to lose, you can achieve added benefits by following it. Dr. Agatston describes the benefits in his book, which include lowered cholesterol and better heart health.

It's just important that you realize you won't lose those eight pounds as quickly as those who do complete Phase 1 (They lose eight to 13 pounds in two weeks.).

Your eight pounds will come off a little bit at a time, but that's just right.

Slow and steady weight loss is more likely to be permanent weight loss.

Thanks for sending in your question, Tricia! Good luck with your weight loss efforts.
