Over the years, I have learned a few things about staying motivated for walking that I wish I would have known when I started out. As a beginner, it's easy to think all walking for weight loss comes down to is putting one foot in front of the other, but there are a few ways to make your workout more enjoyable and something you're likely to stick to. If you're ready to start walking, take these tips into account before you take your first step!
Buddy Up to Stay Motivated
No matter how "gung ho" you are to start walking, there will come a point that you look at your shoes sitting at the door and you just can't make yourself put them on. A sure-fire way to combat this malaise? Find a walking buddy to make a "date" with for a regular walking workout. When you know someone is waiting to walk with you you will be less likely to flake out and cancel. Plus, you get some one-on-one time with friend, too! It's beneficial all around for both of you.
Don't Go Big
One of the easiest ways many of us set ourselves up for weight-loss failure is to set goals that are just too big to be accomplished. Walking seems so simple that you think you can handle those big goals, but it's easier said than done. (Case in point? My first day back walking after six months off went a little something like this: "I can do a mile by just walking this track three times? Let's do it!" ... Fast forward two days later when I subluxated my knee.) To keep motivated, set some mini goals that you can achieve sooner rather than later, such as walking just one more block than usual by next week or doing one additional circuit around the mall tomorrow.
Lace Up for Success
You need a good pair of shoes that will provide you with plenty of stability, support and comfort. Don't assume your day-to-day sneakers will do the trick. Nothing will sap your motivation quicker than having to endure an uncomfortable walk due to worn or poorly-fitting shoes, and suffering from painful feet afterwards. Investing in good walking shoes will pay off in another way: You'll be more likely to walk when you think of the financial investment you made by purchasing shoes just for that purpose. (The same goes for joining a gym so you can use the indoor track or treadmill. Picturing those dollar signs can get you in the car on on your way when little else does!)
