Question: Can weight loss cause gallstones?
Answer: Losing and regaining weight over and over again (weight-cycling or yo-yo dieting) can increase your risk of gallstones. Those who weight cycle (particularly more than 10 pounds) have a higher risk of gallstones than those who lose weight and maintain their weight loss. The more weight a person loses and regains during a "cycle" then the risk of gallstones increases.

It isn't clear exactly why yo-yo dieting leads to an increased risk for gallstones. One theory is that the cholesterol levels increase during the weight-loss phase of a weight cycle increases the risk. Each cycle possibly increases your risk for gallstones. However, further research is required to determine the exact link between weight loss and the risk for gallstones.

To avoid losses and gains that may affect your health it is recommended that you lose no more than two pounds a week on any diet. Any diet that leads to rapid weight loss may not be sound and can lead to health problems such as gallstones. Talk to your doctor if you are rapidly losing weight as sudden weight changes can signal serious health issues.
