Definition: Saturated fat is comprised of molecules of fat in which carbons within fatty acids are linked by a single bond. The name refers to the fact that carbons within the molecules are "saturated" with hydrogens.
Saturated fat is found primarily in foods from animal sources, including meat, cheese and butter, as well as palm and coconut oil. Saturated fats are solid at room temperature.
Diets that are high in saturated fat can cause blood cholesterol levels to become elevated and increase the risk of heart disease.
Examples:
A diet high in foods containing saturated fat -- such as the regular consumption of beef and high-fat cheeses -- can elevate cholesterol levels and increase heart attack risk.
