Definition: Gestational diabetes is a form of diabetes that can occur when a woman is pregnant. A woman's glucose (blood sugar) may rise to a higher than normal level during the second half of her pregnancy. Blood sugar typically returns to normal after pregnancy is over. Women who are diagnosed with gestational diabetes are at increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes later in life.
