The U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC) suggests you ask these important questions of any weight loss program you are considering. Use this as a checklist to check off each question as you ask it. Here's what to ask before starting a diet:
  • What is the cost? ___
  • Are there any additional fees? ___
  • Do I have to pay for food or supplements? ___
  • Do you give refunds? ___
  • Are there any health risks to this program? ___
  • Do you have data you can show me about the effectiveness of this program? ___
  • Do you offer maintenance support? ___
  • What kind of professional or medical supervision is provided? ___
  • What are the credentials of the program's staff or leaders? ___
  • What is required on this program (e.g. menus, counseling visits, meal replacement bars)? ___
