Don't rely on your everyday sneakers for walking for weight loss! Walking shoes are a must for staying comfortable and keeping your feet in good shape. These tips will help you choose and care for walking shoes.

  • Go to a reputable store that specializes in shoes and have your foot measured. Don't assume you know what size to choose. Having your arch-height and foot-length measured may prove you need a different size.
  • Most people have one foot that is slightly larger than the other. Rather than trying to squeeze your larger foot into a smaller size, choose shoes that fit the larger foot comfortably.
  • You should shop in the afternoon or evening because your feet swell during the day. Find shoes that fit your feet comfortably at this time, when they are at their largest.
  • The shoe's arch should match your arch so that the highest part of the sneaker fits accurately underneath the highest part of your foot arch. The ball of your foot should comfortably fit in the widest part of the shoe.
  • If you are heavy, you may notice you wear out the soles of shoes faster than other folks who are lighter. Choose shoes that feature midsoles made out of polyurethane; it takes longer to wear down than other materials.
  • If your shoes get dirty, wash them with a solution of dishwashing detergent and water or wash them in the washing machine on gentle (don't add detergent). Stuff them with newspaper and allow them to air-dry for a day or two.
  • Your socks are important, too. Wearing a good pair with your walking shoes helps prevent blisters and extends the life of your shoes. Medium-weight cotton-blend varieties are a good pick -- socks that are too thick can actually stretch the shoe.
  • Designate your walking shoes as just that. Don't wear them for other purposes such as gardening or running errands. The extra use will just wear them out sooner and cause them lose their shape that much quicker, which means they will provide less support for your feet when you lace them up for a walk.
