Don't Waste Calories

If you consider that we all have a calorie budget each day, how much do you waste on foods that aren't very nutritious? According to the research behind the new Guidelines, we don't put calories to good use, spending them on food that is high calorie but low in nutritional benefit.

Americans are likely to be lacking some important nutrients in their diets, according to the Guidelines. These include: calcium, fiber and vitamins A, C, and E.

Choose instead to spend your calories more wisely on items like fruits, veggies, whole grains and low-fat dairy to get the "fringe benefits" that these foods bring.
