Introduction

The Dietary Guidelines for Americans, 2005, were recently released by the US government. The Guidelines provide sensible nutrition advice and -- for the first time -- also include regular physical activity as a recommendation.

The food pyramid is being updated for the first time since it was originally introduced about 12 years ago.

The most important point in the new Guidelines is that calories matter, so use them wisely.

As HHS Secretary Tommy G. Thompson put it, "Total calories also count, especially as more Americans are gaining weight."
