| Dealing with Diabetes: Part 2 | |
Q: What are your favorite ways to satisfy your sweet tooth?
A: Jeffrey: Let me tell ya, it's not easy. I used to get my blood sugar checked every day because they [Jeffrey's physicians] were trying to decide whether or not to put me on drugs or insulin. They decided not to because I was doing so good. It was easy for me to stick to my new habits once I saw how loosely my smallest pants were fitting!
Sometimes I will have a sugar free ice pop or cookie. For the most part I like feeling better more than I like eating sweets, so I'm willing to give them up.
Q: Susan, how do you keep motivated when you feel poorly?
Susan: I agree with Jeffrey, although I feel bad some days -- there's good days and bad days like anything else in life; it's like he said, nobody said it would be easy -- when I see that I am taking care of myself now, I feel better. Sometimes I think diabetes was the way for God to tell me, "Hey, start paying attention to what you're doing!" [Laughs] and I finally am listening.
It also helps me to remember that just like when I have dieted and lost weight before, it's best to take it slow. I don't go too fast and I try not to be too hard on myself, even though I know in my heart this could be a life or death situation.
Q: Are there any other lifestyle changes you have made besides your diet?
A: Jeffrey: I know exercise is important. It helps to regulate blood sugar. Of course a little exercise is good for everybody! Right now I am working on three bouts of ten minutes per day.
Susan: I am trying to get a lot more sleep. It helps me to feel less weak if I am well-rested. My doctor wants me to walk too, about 45 minutes a day. I am working up to it and I am really enjoying it so far. It feels good to be active again.
Q: Is there any other advice you'd give to our readers?
A: Jeffrey: Yes, don't wait until you have medical problems to take charge of your health. Do it now. Your body will thank you.
