Cravings on The South Beach Diet
As Dr. Agatston explains in his book, plummeting blood sugar can lead to powerful cravings. That said, the best way to deal with cravings is to avoid them. Cravings often drive us to eat high-GI calorie-laden foods -- it's only human!
Plan for snacks using foods from the "to enjoy" list. And don't be afraid you'll be over-doing it by including snacks in your meal plan. They may actually help you eat fewer calories in the end: Dr. Agatston says it's easier to prevent a craving by taking in a few calories ahead of a blood sugar dip than to keep calories in check once the craving comes.
The best way to deal with cravings is to snack regularly. Snacking is not only encouraged on South Beach, it's actually a required part of it. Choose recommended foods like low-fat cheese, raw veggies, or nuts. Snacking the right way -- within a couple hours of mealtime -- prevents a drop in blood sugar.
