How to Talk to Your Doctor about Weight Loss (Part 2)
Frank Talk with Your Physician ...

Make Mini-Goals
If your doctor and you decide on a weight loss goal that is significantly lower than your current weight, discuss breaking down your weight loss into mini-goals. For example, if you have 30 pounds to lose, a healthy and reasonable goal would be to lose between 3.5 to 8 pounds by your one month weigh-in. So, make a happy medium of five pounds your goal for the next 30 days.

Discuss Your Health as it Relates to Your Weight
Ensure that your doctor is aware of your complete medical history and any family illnesses. If you have seen other doctors, be certain your physician has updated and complete records for you.

Be sure to talk about your past weight loss efforts, focusing on what has and hasn't worked for you in the past ... and why.

You'll also want to find out how much exercise she recommends you start out with and if you have any pain or health issues that may prevent you from exercising.

What's Next?
Your doctor may suggest you visit with a nutritionist or dietician. Many hospitals offer lifestyle programs that focus on weight loss. Make certain to ask about any of these opportunities in your area.

She may also suggest you keep a food diary that you will review with her or another health or nutrition professional. This will give both you and your health care team and good idea of where your problem areas lie and any other issues you may have such as binge eating or emotional eating.
