Introduction: Ask Yourself Why
Happy new year! If you are ready to begin your weight loss journey with me today, I would like to congratulate you for taking the first step towards becoming a lighter, healthier you in 2003. Pat yourself on the back for making yourself (and your health) a priority. As someone who has struggled with a weight problem since adolescence, I am going to be honest and tell you that this probably isnt going to be easy. But I know one thing it will be for sure: Worth it!
Since youve joined me for the "New Year, New You!" series, Ill bet youre pretty psyched about losing weight this year. I am making a fresh start today, too. For the first time in my life, my continuing weight loss efforts are for a very important reason: my health. (Not just so Ill look better or finally fit into those smaller size clothes that have been lurking in the back of my closet since I was a college freshman
although I am looking forward to those weight loss side-effects, too!) Its about taking control of my own well-being.
Not to say that other reasons to lose weight arent meaningful. Different things motivate different people. There are many good reasons to lose weight and yours may be unique to only you. I can think of a lot of reasons people have listed in our community discussions, like: I will be able to play with my grandkids more; Ill fit into my mothers wedding gown; Ill be able to shop for "regular" size clothes again; Ill sit comfortably at movie theaters and airplane seating.
I have a few more of those "other" reasons for wanting to reach my goal weight myself: Not every pair of pants I own will have elastic waists; no more aches and pains that my doctors say have no cause (When deep down, I know its my weight causing them.); and no more breathless treks up the flight of three measly steps on my front porch. I am very much looking forward to these benefits, in addition to improved health!
