What is The Schwarzbein Principle?
Diana Schwarzbein, MD, is a California-based physician whose eponymous diet book hit the shelves in the late 90's. Schwarzbein's program focuses on the connection between insulin levels and carbohydrate-intake and how they affect weight.
What will I Give Up?
The Schwarzbein Principle is more or less a modified low-carb diet with plenty of protein and a lot of "good" fats. Say good-bye to processed foods, sugar (including artificial sweeteners), and refined foods, as well as salt, alcohol, and caffeine.
What will I Eat?
Butter, eggs and a lot of meat will be the staples of your diet. Carbs will be drastically reduced initially, but you will be able to add more of them later on. Not getting enough fiber could lead to constipation. You can have more carbs if you exercise regularly.
Does it Work? How Long do I Stay on It?
You're not guaranteed to lose weight right away. It could a while to "heal" your metabolism and achieve weight loss. Once you've met you'r goal weight, the maintenance phase is meant to be stuck to for life.
