Saturday "Smart Swap!": Afternoon Snack

From Jennifer R. Scott, About.com GuideSeptember 5, 2009

Follow me on:

If you're anything like me, the office vending machine starts calling your name around 4 p.m. every day. It starts out as a small whisper and if you ignore it, the machine all but bellows at you to come insert your money in exchange for something a.) salty b.) chocolately or c.) nougat-filled.

On those days when I don't give in to all three, I usually select salty and that snack fix would come in the guise of potato chips or corn chips. But somehow, those chips never seem to stick with me and by 5-ish, I'm pining away for something else. Then, I learned this smart swap:

Swap a small bag of corn chips for an apple with low-fat string cheese to save 320 calories.

Not only am I shaving over 300 calories from my afternoon munch-fest, I am combining a one-two punch of carbohydrate in the form of an apple and protein in low-fat string cheese that gives my afternoon snack the staying power I need to tide me over 'til dinner.
