"Smart Swap!": The Way the Cookie Crumbles

Saturday October 18, 2008
I have very fond memories of visiting the mall where my grandparents lived growing up. Was it the shopping? No. Was it the water features? Not so much.

It was the smell of hot-from-the-oven chocolate chip cookies wafting from the mall cookie store. And if there is one thing I love in life, it is the taste of a still-warm, freshly-baked, gooey, chock-full-of-chips chocolate chip cookie.

I somehow convinced myself if I took the stairs to the floor where the food court was, instead of the elevator, the cookie simply "didn't count". Alas, I would have had to trek up and down those stairs about 20 times to burn off that yummy cookie. And who could possibly commit a decent shopping spree after that many steps? Not I.

So, instead of taking that stairway to cookie heaven, I keep this smart swap in mind: If I eat 13 Miss Meringue chocolate chip minis at 110 calories instead of a Mrs. Fields semi-sweet chocolate chip cookie, I save 170 calories.
