Even My Junk Mail Wants Me to Lose Weight...

I've been getting a lot of ads in the mailbox over the last few months for weight-loss programs and meal-delivery services. They make a lot of big promises, but most of what I actually wanted to know was nowhere to be found! What good does this stuff do me if it provides photos of happy (slim) people and marketing come-ons like "Eat for a week for free!" rather than any clear details about the program?

Before you plunk down any of your hard-earned money, there are a few things you should know about any weight loss program:

  • What is involved in following this program?
  • Is it designed or overseen by nutrition professionals or doctors?
  • How many calories will I consume daily?
  • Are any foods "forbidden" or "bad"?
  • What types of foods will I be eating most often?
  • Does the plan include physical activity?
  • Is the food plan permanent or does it change as I lose weight?
