Click This!: Get Fresh

Friday August 3, 2007
Hard-pressed to get your daily quota of fruit and veggies in? Sometimes it's hard to stay motivated to eat the right things if they're not up to your expectations.

Who hasn't been disappointed by a bland or mushy piece of produce? I know I have! Eating even my favorite fruit (apples) becomes a chore if they aren't of good quality.

The fix? Try to shop seasonally and local whenever you can and your health food fix will be much tastier.

Recently, I found a cool tool at a Web site called Field to Plate. They offer a Seasonal Lookup Guide. Just look for your state and you'll find links to resources that will tell you what produce is freshest in your neck of the woods in any given season.

As a rule of thumb, great picks this month are green beans, peaches, summer squash, and berries for most of the U.S.

To find local farmer's markets in your area (where you'll get the freshest produce possible), the USDA procides a Farmers Market Search to locate particular markets by name, or a list of markets in your area.
