Avoid These Breakfast Blunders...

Wednesday January 31, 2007
Wondering what a breakfast blunder is? It's when you eat something that sounds healthy and find out later... it's junk food.

First up on the breakfast blunder list is whole wheat bagels. That's because whole wheat doesn't mean the same thing as whole grain. They're made of half whole wheat flour and half white flour ... which means more calories, less fiber and fewer vitamins than 100 percent whole grain breads. Look for breads that say 100 percent whole grain rather than just "whole wheat".

Next, just because a cereal has fruit in it, that doesn't make it diet-friendly. Check the nutrition guide on your favorite variety and if it has more sugar per serving than those that don't, ditch it. A whole grain cereal like Cheerios is a much better bet and you can add your own fresh fruit. It tastes better and it's better for you!

Whether you pick one up at your favorite bakery or alongside your cup of joe at the coffee shop, bakery muffins can easily contain up to 500 calories! Scones are just as bad. Even low-fat versions can be high cal. Instead, try yogurt bars, fruit and oatmeal bars, and cereal fruit bars (Just be sure to compare nutrition info to find the lowest fat and calories!). Or, try using applesauce in place of some sugar if you make them from scratch at home.

Stop at your local greasy spoon and order an egg white omelet and you may be getting more fat that you bargained for if it's made using butter. Make it at home by using cooking spray and you'll keep the fat in check and save a few bucks.
